Benzodiazepines are a class of psychoactive drugs that are often prescribed to treat conditions such as anxiety, insomnia and seizures. Prescribed daily use can result in physical dependence. This means that the body has neuro-adapted to the drug's chronic presence and, therefore, stopping or reducing the dose will often result in withdrawal symptoms. The withdrawal syndrome can be severe, disabling and sometimes long-lasting (months to years). For this reason, most global benzodiazepine prescribing guidelines recommend that prescriptions be limited to intermittent (one-off) or very short term use (no longer than 2-4 weeks maximum, including the tapering off period). Even with these precautions, some patients still report physical dependence and subsequent withdrawal after as little as one week of prescribed use.Alarmingly, some patients are kept on benzodiazepines for years and are not informed of these potential consequences at the time of prescription.
